Landlocked Salmon
Ouananiche, are a landlocked version of the wild Atlantic Salmon - which is noted as being "The King" of all game fish.
Respectfully earning it's own royal status as "The Crown Prince" of Labrador the Ouananiche is truly a well sought after trophy.
With its lightning fast speed and high flying acrobatic jumps, pound for pound the Land Locked Salmon fight every bit as hard as the sea run "Atlantic" especially when hooked on a light weight fly rod. These silver "Landlocks" will readily take fly presentations. Offering a type of smelt imitating streamer pattern such as the Grey Ghost or Joe's Smelt will usually entice a strike by these remarkable beauties.
One can also witness the take to the air antics while trolling along the surface with a fly rod or spinning outfit. Trolling for these opportunistic feeders using streamer flies trolled close behind a boat at a rapid pace is also a highly effective method. Trolled spoons, wobblers, and sewn on bait are also excellent offerings.
Ouananiche– Big, Strong, Bright beautiful fish in cold sparkling clean waters that flow through Labrador's picturesque landscape.. What more could you ask for?
I forgot to mention the fact that the 22 pound 11 ounce World Record Ouananiche came from the Smallwood Reservoir which is literally right in our Backyard!!!
