Snowshoe and Arctic Hare
The Arctic Hare along with the Snowshoe Hare reside in Labrador. These species are also found on the island of Newfoundland.
The Arctic Hare is native to both parts of the province, and the Snowshoe Hare was introduced to Newfoundland around 1860.
Hunting surveys done by the Wildlife Department have released numbers of some hundred thousand Hare are harvested annually and most of them are Snowshoe.
The Snowshoe Hare are more commonly distributed than the Arctic in Labrador. The Snowshoe Hare are usually found in boreal forests that offer the greatest amount of food and shelter. The Snowshoe can also tip the scales at two to four pounds.
Our Hare hunting season usually begins with the opening date for both species on the 1st of October and the season continues through to the 3rd week of April.
If you have never tried this type of small game adventure, you should give it a try because the high success rate of the locals will tell you that the hunting is great and obviously the meat is highly desirable.
